The Bird Cage
It’s a heart-wrenching sound
A Love Bird’s song
When trapped behind bars
Built from another’s wrongs
Confining the poor thing
With its own admiration
For I—the wayward capturer--
And it’s loyal determination
The whistling sound
Echoes in my heart
And it threatens
To tear me apart
With a piercing plea
Chirping rhythm and blues
To end the suffering
My poor feathered muse
To feel the guilt
Only serves me right
My incessant confusion
Has caused your plight
With nothing to be done
And your heart so abused,
After all this time
I remain confused
Take solace oh Love Bird,
I’ve been here before
Trapped where you are
Condemning my heart to more
I, too, have felt
The caged bird’s pain
I, too, have gazed out
Through the lonely rain
Of a thousand teardrops
In my eyes
Threatening to overthrow
My prideful disguise
And hit what I’m
So scared to lose
Through a bleak captivity
I did not choose
I know what it is
To feel as your sharp
Glass tears slice
And shred your heart
The salty water
Will cause the lock to rust
That binds your heart
And protects it from lust
Constricting it
‘till the blood just rots
Blocking your veins
And causing clots
Rendering you helpless
Caught in a love
That misleads you
The naïve turtle dove
As your tear drops shatter
And catch the light
Glistening splinters gather
Building up spite
Fall as they may
Throughout the night
Caged as you are
Under Cupid’s might
That wicked demon
His arrow aimed at your throat
Making you choke on your breath
As you chirp each note
Trying to convince
Your lost turtle dove
To return to you
And re-ignite your love
But time has run out
You’ve both flown your course
And we all know love’s died
When it must be forced
The irony is,
One day you will be
Outside the cage
In place of me
Your heart will cry out
As another bird cries
And it will tear up your heart
When you see tears in its eyes
